As I was on my ‘walk’n talk’ with God tonight, a lyric to a song popped into my head. The lyrics come from an old Kenny Rogers’ song titled, ‘The Gambler’. The lyrics go a little something like this, “you gotta know when to hold em. Know when to fold em. Know when to walk away. Know when to run”.
I am not overly fond of country music, so I found it curious to me singing it inside my mind. When I say singing it, I mean that particular part in the song. I don’t know the song that well. I wondered what would make me sing that particular song?
The moment I caught my actions, Clairity popped in.
“Think about it for a moment. Can the message in the song be considered in another way? Perhaps when you interact with other people in any given situation?”
Interesting. I hadn’t considered that. I understood the song to be referencing gambling? With that said, there is more than one way to look at something, including a message within a song. With that in my mind, I thought about it.
“You gotta know when to hold em”. This can reference your boundaries. You must know when to stand firm on your conviction. You must maintain confidence in who you are, alongside awareness of the cards you choose to play in your life. You must stand firm on moral ground. Regardless of who stands before you. This can be a great challenge when the person who stands before you is kin with authority, or is an business person within intimidating authority.
“You gotta know when to fold em”, can relate to knowing when to pick your battles. Pick your battles wisely, basically. If a person had already decided who your character is in their mind, you are talking to a wall. It would be as useful as three tits on a bull. You wouldn’t receive any sweet sustenance from the tits. You would get a quick kick to the teeth and likely a splitting headache.
When you put effort into your ability to convince someone of who you are, or what you personally stand for, and who had already made a decision when it comes to who you are and what you stand for, you are saying to yourself and the world that you are of little value. That most certainly is a poor investment; it is also a high risk investment. Choose wisely.
The butt hole of the piggy bank would be too large for the plug to catch the coins, basically. Invest in your energy wisely. Invest in others wisely. Talking with a bullheaded person would be you agreeing to toss away your golden mind willy nilly. Let them have their perception. Be thankful that you don’t have to have the same one as them and move on.
“You gotta know when to walk away”, can mean to literally know when to do that. It’s easier said than done. Reason being, acceptance of the truth of a situation, regardless of who it is with, or in what area of your life, and how much of your heart, mind, and energy had already been invested, takes courage. Quite often it takes unconditional love for another if not yourself. You must also trust the unknown, as well as accept then choose to release any thoughts of what could have been in the end. A challenge indeed. Choosing the “higher ground” is challenging; in fact, it requires two keys to break out of this mental prison and walk away. One represents you choosing yourself. The other key is forgiveness for all involved, especially yourself.
Lastly, “you gotta know when to run”. Everyone could benefit from exercise. Your choice to train yourself is beneficial. You begin to receive inspiration. When you receive an inspired idea, run with it. Especially when you see something or someone you know you are drawn to run towards. Run, don’t walk, when your name is called to take action. Make it count and believe in yourself.
Also know when to close the door to people who hold intent to hurt you. This includes those who are ignorant to this fact.

Everyone around you helps you to learn how to master your own level of discernment. Discernment is a journey which highlights the answers to each aspect of that song. Now that song has taken on an entirely new meaning for me. What about you? Definitely something to consider?
